1. International Chamber of Shipping updates flag state performance table. Using a wide range of objective performance indicators, the ICS Table provides an analysis of the extent to which flag State administrations adhere to their responsibilities to follow global standards and regulations governing safety, environmental protection and the employment conditions of seafarers – as adopted by the UN International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the International Labour Organization (ILO).

2. Shipping companies call for limits on biofuels in shipping. Shipping companies including the German shipping giant Hapag-Lloyd and a number of NGOs have called on the UN global shipping agency to exclude unsustainable biofuels from its list of green alternatives to traditional fossil fuels.

3. Glencore announces appointment María Margarita Zuleta as an Independent non-executive director. Glencore  announces the appointment of María Margarita Zuleta as an Independent Non-Executive Director of the Company with immediate effect.

Since April 2019 María Margarita Zuleta has been Dean of the School of Government of Universidad de los Andes in Bogotá, Colombia. Having obtained her law degree in 1991, Ms Zuleta began her career as a Colombian lawyer in private practice, becoming a partner of Brigard & Urrutia in Bogotá.

5. SeaKapital signs for LNG bunker newbuilds. Hong Kong shipowner and leasing specialist SeaKapital Holdings has embarked on a newbuilding project in the LNG bunkering sector.The company, set up by two of Hong Kong’s well-known shipping names, Sabrina Chao (pictured) and Kenneth Lam, has contracted up to six vessels at Ningbo Xinle Shipbuilding in China.

6. MSC books up to eight megamaxes at Changhong International. Gianluigi Aponte’s Mediterranean Shipping Co (MSC) has returned to Zhoushan Changhong International Shipyard in China for a new series of LNG dual-fuel megamax containerships.The Swiss-based liner giant has signed up for four firm 21,700 teu newbuilds with options for up to four additional vessels. Deliveries are set for 2027 and 2028.

7. Captain of aircraft carrier involved in collision off Egypt dismissed. The US Navy has decided to relieve the commanding officer of the USS Truman – the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier that had a collision with a bulk carrier off Egypt last week.Captain Dave Snowden was relieved Thursday for “loss of confidence in his ability to command”, the navy said.

8. Russian ship in trouble with hull breach. A Russian Panama-flagged cargo ship carrying 3,000 tons of corn is in trouble the Sea of Azov after suffering a hull breach near the port of Azov in Russia’s Rostov region, according to local media.The 46-year-old vessel, Pavlo Grabovskiy, departed from Rostov en route to Samsun in Turkey, when it sustained serious hull damage on February 16, causing it to take on water. Russian authorities claim the ship has since been patched up and will be moved when weather conditions improve.

9. US Commerce Secretary’s Comments Give Cruise Operators Case Of Deja Vu. Cruise operators may yet avoid paying more US corporate taxes despite threats from US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick to close favorable loopholes. Lutnick’s comments on Fox News Wednesday that that US-based cruise companies should be paying taxes even on ships registered abroad sent shares lower, though analysts indicated the worry may be overblown.

10. New Zealand Says Chinese Navy Held 2nd Live-Fire Drills In International Waters. New Zealand said the Chinese navy conducted a live-fire exercise in international waters near the Pacific nation on Saturday, a day after it held a similar drill between Australia and New Zealand that forced airlines to divert flights.
