Increased threat to shipping / Gulf of Guinea 01-200421

INCREASED THREAT TO SHIPPING

Event: Report of increased threat to shipping

Date: 20 April 2021

Description: ARC has received a report stating that the threat of piracy has increased in Zone E (Togo, Benin, Nigeria).

MDAT-GoG statement on the threat: “We strongly recommend that the seafaring community and ships transiting these areas increase their vigilance and retain an enhanced local surveillance
and apply BMP WA procedures.”

ARC Comment: There has not been a piracy attack for over a month in West Africa and no crew are currently held by pirates, so it is likely that pirates may attempt an attack in the next
fortnight. All vessels should continue to operate at a heightened security level.
