THREAT AGAINST OIL WELLS

Description: A group called the Bonny Freedom Fighters have issued a threat to “close all oil wells in the Niger Delta” if the murder in December 2019 of an Ijaw assistant
police commissioner is not properly investigated by the Buhari administration. The spokesperson stated that “if this does not happen, the consequence that will follow throughout the Niger Delta region will be unimaginable”.
Analysis: This is a new group, with no previous public statements or activity, and the statement originally appeared on a small Nigerian news company’s Facebook page
on 10 January before being picked up by a larger, national newspaper on 15 January 2020. This would suggest that while the content of the threat is serious, the ability of the group to actually carry out attacks on the oil wells in the Niger Delta region is
limited.
