THREAT AGAINST OIL & GAS
Event: Militant threats
Date and Time: 14 December 2020
Location: Niger Delta, Nigeria
Description: A militant group called the “Niger Delta Liberators”
(NDL) have issued a threat against the international oil companies operating in the Niger Delta. The group stated that the companies should remove all expatriates from the region and listed the following oil facilities “for destruction” in an operation
named “Cripple the Economy with Zero Crude Oil Production”:
-
Chevron major oil platforms
-
Shell major oil pipelines
-
Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation gas pipelines that distribute from Escravos-Warri-Kaduna and also supply to Abuja.
The militants issued a list of demands with a 21-day ultimatum, including rejecting the national budget until the Niger Delta Development Commission board is inaugurated, and financial
demands for the better development of the Niger Delta region.
Analysis: This group has not been named before, and is likely an group of militants in the region who feel that by creating a new group they bring attention to their demands. There is a lot of unrest in the Niger Delta currently, and the
threat remains against oil and gas with recent attacks on Shell and Agip pipelines. However, it is often near-impossible to tell with certainty which groups have carried out and are able to carry out attacks, and it is likely that once money has been funnelled
to the group, the threat will subside.
