Increased threat to shipping / Gulf of Guinea 02-021020

INCREASED THREAT TO SHIPPING

Event: Report of increased threat to shipping

Date: 2 October 2020.

Description: ARC have received a report that a piracy group in Bayelsa State, Nigeria, is planning to launch a speedboat deep offshore Nigeria in order to attack merchant shipping.

Analysis: In terms of timing, there is usually an increase in attacks in the Gulf of Guinea in the last 3 months of the year after a quieter mid-year period. Whether this report is credible
or not remains to be seen but the threat deep offshore Nigeria and into the surrounding countries’ waters remains and vessels should exercise extreme vigilance when sailing in the area anyway.

ARC will update if any further information is received.
