53 total losses of bulk carriers of 10,000 ton deadweight and above with the reported loss of 202 seafarers. However, the organization says casualty records from 1994 to the present day indicates a gradual improvement over the years in terms of numbers of

3. Mapping a Cyber Attack
In the cyber security industry, we are seeing a change in the way that hacks are being performed. A recent set of attacks against critical infrastructure entities, such as oil and gas pipeline operators, utilities and even
some city and state governments reveal new motives and methods. The attackers were not out to steal data but were looking to disrupt services. There are reportedly seven stages to such attacks – and these are Reconnaissance, Weaponization, Delivery, Exploitation,
Installation, Command & control, and Action on objective.

4. 3D Printed Ships
A 3D printed ship has moved a step closer. Shares in New York-listed 3D Systems rocketed on news it has signed a collaboration pact with Huntington Ingalls Industries’ Newport News Shipbuilding division to qualify metal additive manufacturing technologies
to build naval warships. Newport News Shipbuilding is the sole designer, builder and refueller of US Navy aircraft carriers and one of two providers of US Navy submarines. Through this collaboration, the yard will move portions
of its manufacturing process from traditional methods to additive, anticipating enhanced production rates of high accuracy parts with reduced waste.

5. Search and Rescue Calls
Intercargo, the dry bulk shipping industry association, has called for greater search and rescue infrastructure in the world. In its latest Bulk Carrier Casualty Report, Intercargo discussed the tragic sinking of the Stellar Daisy VLOC in March last year
which saw 22 crew die. “While the Search And Rescue (SAR) efforts in response to this sinking are to be praised, in its aftermath the shipping community should be concerned about the non-availability of sufficient SAR capabilities
in the vicinity of busy shipping lanes around the world and revisit this issue,” Intercargo stated.

6. Amazing Piece of Kit
A nice, cheeky, piece reminding mariners to look out of the window, by introducing the "3-Dimensional Flat Screen Reality Display". This amazing device will assist your bridge crew in the following areas: Piloting
of the vessel,
Navigation, Collision avoidance, Watchkeeping, and Weather observations. Amazingly,
the 3-Dimensional Flat Screen Reality Display (3D FSRD) can do all this with no external sources of power, no additional computing power, and it permits input from a wide variety of sensors!  No retrofit is required for the majority of vessels, and additional
units are already staged worldwide.

7. Mega Gas Battle
Off the coast of Western Australia, a battle between mega giants is unfolding. The combatants involve the world’s biggest semi-submersible platform, the longest sub-sea pipeline in the southern hemisphere, and the largest floating facility ever built. They’re
all there for the same reason: natural gas – and they’re hoping to start drawing it up this month.
As several countries begin to move away from coal as an energy resource, this alternative fossil fuel, which produces 50%
less carbon dioxide for every unit of energy generated, is increasingly in demand in our energy hungry world.

An explosion has damaged a Turkish vessel carrying wheat to Yemen’s Houthi-controlled port of Saleef, with varying accounts attributing the incident on Thursday to an unexplained blast aboard the ship or a possible missile strike. A
