Brussels Workshop Considers Challenges of Large Scale Rescues

The challenges faced by merchant vessels when rescuing large numbers of migrants adrift at sea will come under the spotlight in a practical workshop being held jointly by InterManager and the European Community Shipowners Association (ECSA) in Brussels today.

Aiming to help shipping companies better understand and evaluate the challenges involved in carrying out such humanitarian operations, the workshop will feature presentations on EU migration policy, ship security and rescue guidance, as well as hearing testimonials from shipowners and ship managers whose vessels have carried out such operations.

Capt. Kuba Szymanski, Secretary General of InterManager, said: “This is an important event which InterManager is proud to host for the benefit of the whole shipping community. It is an important opportunity to share best practice and together consider the challenges faced by our vessels when coming to the aid of large numbers of people in danger at sea.”

The workshop is taking place during the first ever European Shipping Week in Brussels (March 2 – 6). European Shipping Week which has brought together professionals from throughout the shipping industry to highlight the importance of global shipping to legislators in Brussels such as the European Commission, European Parliament and the Council of Ministers.
