Attack on Oil Platform / Nigeria 01-200821

ATTACK AGAINST O&G INSTALLATION

Event: Attack on Oil Platform

Date and Time: 16 August 2021

Location: 04°25’N, 005°75’E

Description: Oil platform Auntie Julie
was approached by a skiff with armed persons onboard. The attackers fired against the platform and the onboard security team returned fire. Once a security vessel arrived, the attackers retreated and stopped the attack.

Analysis: There has been an increase in attacks on oil and gas in the last two weeks, with a notable attack on Shell Nigeria (SPDC) personnel which resulted in 8 dead. As no groups have
yet claimed responsibility, it is difficult to ascribe responsibility to perpetrators, which may be either the
Niger Delta Avengers, IPOB, or other groups based in and around the Niger Delta region in the south-east of Nigeria. There has been an increase in statements and threats due to the signing into law of the Petroleum Industry Bill which has proved
controversial for some groups in the region due to the payment schedules included in the bill.
