5. Climate change: Shipping agrees net-zero goal but critics chide deal. The global shipping industry has agreed to reduce planet warming gases to net-zero “by or around 2050”, but critics say the deal is fatally flawed.
Ships produce around 3% of global CO2 but countries will now have to reduce this as close as possible to zero by the middle of the century. Another one of the world’s top 10 carriers has joined the rush for methanol-powered ships.Evergreen has firmed up a much-awaited order for 24 methanol dual-fuel 16,000 teu vessels. 7. Indonesia seizes Iranian-flagged VLCC. Indonesian authorities have seized an Iranian-flagged very large crude carrier suspected of illegal ship-to-ship oil transfer in the country’s North Natuna Sea. 8. Eleven ships break down in wake of latest Houston bunker contamination case. Houston has another bunkering problem. Fuel checker VPS is reporting a bunker contamination case at the Texan port, the largest bunkering hub in the Americas. 9. Next Wave of North American LNG Export Projects to Face Labor Challenges. A coming wave of North American liquefied natural gas (LNG) export projects faces staffing challenges that are prompting some of the biggest developers to expand training and coordinate projects to keep construction workers. There are eight export projects now under way that when completed would add 86 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) capacity of the chilled natural gas.
