New Chapter 4 to MARPOL Annex VI “Regulations
on energy efficiency for ships” makes mandatory the
Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) for new ships
and the Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan
(SEEMP) for all ships. The EEDI is expected to stimulate
continued innovation and technical development of all the
components influencing the fuel efficiency of a ship from
its design phase. In addition to existing regulation, new
dates are also looming for NOx and SOx.
