WHO WE ARE
Our members are in-house or third party ship and crew managers and related maritime companies and shipping organisations, involved in managing more than 5,000 ships and responsible for over 250,000 seafarers.
We are the only organisation dedicated to representing the ship management industry. Internationally-recognised and well-respected, we represent our members at an international level, lobbying on their behalf to ensure their views and needs are taken into account within the wider maritime community.
Our unrivalled presence within the wider maritime industry has allowed the Association to be at the forefront of several initiatives, including:

• The single window system
• Paperless shipping
In our bid to ensure sustainability and quality, full members must establish, implement, and maintain a quality management system in accordance with the requirements of ISO 9001:2000 for all activities undertaken by the organisation.
InterManager supports – and is involved in – several projects related to either management, technical, or welfare. These have included studies into fatigue, information sharing, ballast water, shipping KPIs, and communication facilities for seafarers, as well as our Adopt a Ship program, which builds on the groundwork of the Cyprus Chamber of Shipping and Cyprus Maritime Environmental Protection Association, bringing together schools, colleges, and orphanages to interact with seafarers on board ships and develop an awareness of shipping, and the maritime industry, particularly among the younger generation.

HISTORY
InterManager was initially founded under the name ISMA (International Ship Managers’ Association) in 1991, with the first steps in the creation of what is now known as InterManager beginning back in 1988 when five leading ship management companies – Barber International, Columbia Shipmanagement, Denholm Ship Management, Hanseatic Shipping Company, and Wescol International Marine – met to discuss the possibility of improving standards within the ship management sector and the shipping industry in general.
ISMA was initially formed to improve standards and achieve a safer, more environmentally conscious, reliable, and controllable ship management industry, which continues to be the aim of InterManager today.
The ISMA Code triggered a continuing quality movement, with classification societies introducing their own codes, ship owners adapting codes designed for the production industry, and the International Maritime Organization (IMO) adopting the ISMA Code for mandatory implementation by flag states as per Chapter IX of the SOLAS Convention.
The ISMA Code of Ship Management Standards, the foundation stone of the Association, reflected the highest standards of ship management practice. It was drafted by practical ship managers, and based on the experience gained through their involvement in day-to-day ship management.
Today the entry ticket to InterManager membership is a commitment to work towards ISO 9001:2000 compliance.
Full Membership is open to ship and crew managers, and ship and crew management divisions of ship owning companies.
Organisations wishing to become members of InterManager must satisfy one of the following criteria:
• They must have established, implemented, and maintained a quality management system in accordance with the requirements of ISO 9001:2000, and have obtained a corresponding ISO certificate, OR
• They are willing to undergo a Certification Process and obtain and maintain certification from an Approved Certification Body within not more than eighteen months from the date of its admission as a member, OR
• They have exemplary records and are acknowledged by peers as leaders in their geographical market sectors and publicly committed to advancing research and implementation of Corporate Social Responsibility in shipping.
