Great news for the Crew of REANUR – but it looks like they have engine problems let’s hope someone helps them – maybe they have no fuel left or the likes.
Worrisome for those crew and their families on board EAGLE but that was Monday news. Let us hope it is not another ASPHALT VENTURE like scenario.
By ANDREW MWANGURA – Somali Report
Somali pirates have released the Liberian-owned MV Renuar, although the vessel was believed to be suffering engine problems, maritime sources said.
The bulk cargo vessel, taken on December 11, and its crew of 24 Filipinos was set free on Saturday after the owner paid a $6-million ransom, sources in the shipping industry told Somalia Report. According to Philippines foreign ministry officials, all of the seamen were safe and healthy.
Despite earlier reports that the Cypriot-flagged bulk carrier MV Eagle was steaming out to safe waters after being released by pirates, Somalia Report understands from the owner that the vessel was still in pirate hands as of Monday night.
Maritime sources and the pirates themselves told media the 52,163 dwt Greek-owned vessel, also crewed by 24 Filippinos, had been set free after a ransom somewhere between $4 million and $6 million was paid.
Despite the presence of dozens of international warships off the coast of Somalia, piracy has continued to blossom, and the last few weeks has seen frenetic activity. According to the International Maritime Bureau, there were 97 attacks off Somalia in the first three months of 2010, more than double last year\’s figure over the same period. Some fifteen vessels were successfully seized by that point, and at least another two have been seized since then.
