UPDATE Industrial Action / Nigeria 01-240920

PROPOSED INDUSTRIAL ACTION

Event: Industrial Action, Nigeria

Date: 28 September 2020

Location: Nigeria (nationwide)

Description:
Nigeria’s main labour unions have threatened an indefinite strike from Monday, 28 September 2020, to protest an increase in power and petrol prices, the leader of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) said, after a meeting with the government two weeks
ago ended in a deadlock.

The NLC, which represents millions of workers across most sectors of Africa’s biggest economy, including parts of the oil industry, plans to embark on a general strike starting next week, leader Ayuba Wabba said.

A reversal of the petrol and power price hikes would avert the strike, Wabba said in a statement.

Analysis. It is not 100% that this strike action will still proceed, as previous threats of strike action have been held off by last minute action by the government. ARC will monitor and update if the situation changes.

UPDATE: Strike action has been called off following late night negotiations between NLC, Trade Union Congress and the Nigerian government which were concluded early this morning, 28 September 2020. The Nigerian government agreed to suspend
the power price increase for two weeks whilst a committee looks into the justification for the price increase.
