UPDATE 1 Increased Threat to Shipping 01-230921

INCREASED THREAT TO SHIPPING

Event: Report of increased threat to shipping

Date: 23 September 2021

Description: MDAT-GoG have released an advisory stating that there is an increased threat to shipping in the EEZs of Nigeria, Benin and Togo (Zone E in the Gulf of Guinea) in the next
24-48 hours, with pirates possibly employing a mothership to support their actions.

ARC Comment: There has been a lull in piracy attacks in West Africa since July. The cause for this is likely due to a combination of number of factors, however generally there is an increase
in attacks in the region in the last 3 months of the year. Vessels should increase security onboard throughout the region and report any suspicious activity to assist in awareness to other vessels.

UPDATE 1: MDAT-GoG have issued an update stating that the threat level has now reduced following successful security operations onshore in Nigeria. No further information.
