Description
Two on-duty crews on an offshore platform reported a speedboat sailing close by. Operator management was informed before they retreated to the engine room. A “rescue
team” was deployed to the platform, however by the time they arrived, the speed boat had left. Nothing was reported stolen and it is believed likely that no-one had climbed on.
Analysis
From the report, it is difficult to determine whether this speedboat is a pirate craft, or a more local opportunistic robbery group. The location is a significant distance
from Nigeria; however, considering pirates attacks this year in the waters of Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea and Gabon, it is possible that this is a pirate speedboat. Vessels in the area should remain vigilant as it’s heading was not stated and it is likely
still in the area.
