Description: A report has been received that a merchant ship has been attacked 4.5nm South of the Bonny Fairway Buoy.

Update: A bulk carrier was attacked whilst sailing at 14kts. A security escort vessel was nearby. Vessel’s status still not confirmed.

Update 2: The 7 pirates boarded the vessel and gained access to the accommodation structure through a porthole. They abducted 10 crew members.

Two crew members were wounded (one head wound, one bullet wound on leg). The pirates left the vessel via the speedboat with a security vessel in pursuit.

After one outboard engine on the pirates’ vessel failed, the security vessel reached their position and engaged fire. A wave caused the speedboat to capsize. The pirates and crew members were rescued by the
security vessel, and were then transferred to the Nigerian Navy.
