Militant Threat / Nigeria 02-210321

THREAT AGAINST OIL & GAS

Event: Militant threats

Date and Time: 21 March 2021

Location: Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria

Description: A group called
Unyekisong Akwa Ibom have instructed multination oil companies operating in Akwa Ibom state to
“immediately evacuate all the innocent workers from their operational bases and rigs both onshore and offshore
within our territorial waters to avoid casualties and damages.” This demand is based on the group’s claim that the “oil companies have totally abandoned their Corporate Social Responsibility”.

Analysis: Local media report that this group, which seems to be a new creation, is formed of former members of other militant groups including well-known groups such as the Niger Delta Avengers and
MEND. However, considering this claim of inheritance from better known groups (likely to try and give the group some authority) and the lack of previous claims or known operations, it is likely that this will not be followed up by militant actions.
