PROPOSED INDUSTRIAL ACTION
Event: Industrial Action, Nigeria
Date: 13 October 2020
Location: Lagos ports, Nigeria
Description: The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has threatened to strike in 21 days if the Nigerian government does not follow its demands. MWUN has stated that the trucks of
4 major shipping companies (Maersk Line, Pacific International Lines, Mediterranean Shipping Company and Mitsui OSK Lines) were responsible for the traffic gridlock on the Oshodi-Apapa Expressway and accused the shipping companies of
deliberately keeping “container-laden trucks as means of attracting demurrage payment daily from our already over-burdened members, truck owners and their drivers.” MWUN stated that if the government failed to
“call these companies to order”, the union’s members would withdraw their services from the ports.
ARC will update if there is any intervention by the Nigerian authorities or if strike action goes ahead.
