Increased threat to shipping / Gulf of Guinea 02-181220

INCREASED THREAT TO SHIPPING

Event: Report of increased threat to shipping

Date: 18 December 2020.

Description: MDAT-GoG have released the following notice:

“MDAT-GOG has been made aware that a Pirate Action Group is likely to be active in the vicinity of 0217N 00354E  in the areas E and D between 181200UTC and 190800UTC. All vessels operating
in the region are advised to be extremely vigilant.”

This alert follows a suspicious approach on a gas tanker on the morning of 18 December 2020 in the area near 02°17’N, 003°54’E.

There is a sustained and consistent threat to all types of merchant shipping in the area. Vessels should note:

  • Pirates have attacked tankers, bulk carriers and cargo vessels.
  • It is likely that pirates will remain in the area until a successful attack.
  • Even if an attack fails, pirates may attempt to attack the vessel again. It is therefore vitally important that vessels remain vigilant even after deterring one attack.

ARC will update if any further information is received.
