INCREASED THREAT TO SHIPPING

Event: Report of increased threat to shipping

Date: 17 December 2020.

Description: MDAT-GoG have released the following notice:

“MDAT-GOG has been informed of a HIGH RISK maritime incident in the coming hours and days in the following AREA’S F/E/D. We highly recommend to the seafarer community and ships transiting
in these areas to exercise a sharp look-out and apply BMP WA procedure.”

The alert is spread across the following areas:

  • F (Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Ivory Coast, Ghana)
  • E (Togo, Benin, Nigeria)
  • D (Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, Sao Tome & Principe, Gabon).

MDAT-GoG have only stated that this is based on “reliable sources”, but this is across a very large area. All vessels in these areas should be operating at a high level security at all times already, particularly in the waters of Ghana,
Togo, Benin, Nigeria, Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea. There is already a high level of threat in these waters.

If any further information is released, ARC will update.
