Increased threat to shipping / Gulf of Guinea 01-030920

INCREASED THREAT TO SHIPPING

Event: Report of increased threat to shipping

Date: 3 September 2020.

Description: MDAT-GoG have released the following report:

Information from military source indicate an armed group from Rivers State, Nigeria, are planning a piracy attack against vessels in area D (especially Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea)
since the 1st of September. It is likely the attack will occur at low tide, when the monitoring units are missing. Therefore, you are requested to be on maximum alert, to increase vigilance and surveillance and intensify intelligence both on the water and
in the port. Systematically identify and search all suspicious boats coming from or leaving Nigeria. Report any suspicions and take into account any diversion.

Analysis: Based on recent attack patterns, ARC agrees with the above warning that the threat is heightened at a significant distance from the Niger Delta coast. Recent attacks have occurred
deep offshore and outside of Nigerian waters where there are minimal or no Navy forces or commercial security services available. Vessels in the following areas should be particularly wary:

  • Offshore Douala, Cameroon
  • Offshore Limbe, Cameroon
  • Offshore Malabo, Equatorial Guinea
  • Offshore Luba, Equatorial Guinea

ARC will update if any further information is received.
