Increased Threat to Shipping 02-090721

INCREASED THREAT TO SHIPPING

Event: Report of increased threat to shipping

Date: 9 July 2021

Description: ARC has received a report that a pirate group is active in waters around Sao Tome and Principe. Vessels sailing through the following areas should increase vigilance:

  • Sao Tome and Principe
  • Southern Nigerian EEZ
  • Nigeria/Sao-Tome Joint Development Zone
  • Cameroon
  • Equatorial Guinea
  • Gabon.

ARC Comment: This warning follows a suspicious approach on an offshore vessel in Equatorial Guinea waters on 6 July. Pirates have previously operated in this area, notably in February
when pirates hijacked a fishing vessel and used it as a mothership, carried out attacks on other larger merchant vessels in the area.

ARC will update if/when further information received.
