COMMUNITY ACTION & PROTEST

Event: Community Action

Date and Time: October 2020

Location: Nigeria, nationwide

Description: There are ongoing protests across Nigeria against the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) under the protest name of End SARS. There have been a number of violent incidents,
particularly in Abuja and Lagos which have resulted in deaths and injuries, mainly of protesters. As the protests have attracted more and more support, sections of cities have become gridlocked with traffic.

Analysis: Whilst there has been a high level of criticism levelled at the SARS units for some time, the most recent protests seem to have been started by footage appearing on 3rd
October on social media of a SARS police officer fatally shooting a young Nigeria in Delta State.

Major protests in cities started on 8th and 9th October, resulting in the Inspector-General of Police announcing on 11th October that SARS had been formally
disbanded. However, as SARS officers are to be moved into other police units as part of the dissolution of SARS, instead of being removed completely, protests have continued.

It is likely that the protests will continue until further changes are announced in the Nigerian police and judicial system. The protests are not likely to have a direct immediate effect
on port and shipping operations. However, access to ports from major roads may be disrupted and delayed which may affect trucks coming into ports and any personnel attempting to reach the ports via road.
