COMMUNITY ACTION
Event: Community Action Threat
Date and Time: 27 July
2019
Location: Ndokwa, Delta State, Nigeria
Description: The youth wing of the Ndokwa Neku Union (NNU) has given the Nigerian Federal Government 14 days to respond to their demands or “all oil facilities, including those of Nigeria
Agip Oil Company, Sterling Global Oil, Pillar Oil, Platform Petroleum Company, Chorus Energy, Midwestern Oil and Gas, and others in Ndokwa nation will be brought to their knees”.
Amongst their demands they demand that the Nigerian government “immediately repatriate over 2000 illegal immigrants from India, China, Lebanon and others illegally working in oil companies
in Ndokwa nation”, accusing the expatriate workers of taking jobs that should belong to local communities.
Analysis: There have been a flurry of demands and statements from various groups across the Niger Delta in the last month. Most of these surround two issues: the awarding of 57 marginal oil fields to oil companies and ongoing fraud and
corruption allegations and investigations in the Niger Delta Development Commission. Whilst this warning from the NNU will likely not turn to violent acts, there may be an increase in protests at oil and gas facilities in the area, and any expatriate workers
in the area should take extra precautions.
