COMMUNITY ACTION

Event: Community Action

Date and Time: 17 September 2020

Location: Abidiama Community, Ekeremor LGA, Bayelsa State, Nigeria

Description: Youths from Agbidiama Community in Ekeremor LGA protested at Clough Creek and shut down Opukushi flow station. The flow station is operated by Shell Petroleum Development
Company (SPDC), and the youths have accused SPDC and an associated company, Clinthwealth Nigeria Limited, of not providing employment or engaging with local companies for support services (such as catering). SPDC have responded stating that they support the
communities they operate in and “are open to discussions on any complaints for an amicable resolution”.

Analysis: It is not likely that this protest will turn violent and will likely be resolved quickly by SPDC following negotiations with the youth’s leaders. However, ARC will monitor the
situation in case it does worsen or if there is any further disruption.
