UPCOMING EVENT
Event: Local Civil Unrest
Date and Time: 20 – 21 September 2017
Location: Lomé, Togo
Position: Across Lomé, Togo
Description: Following public protests in Lomé, Togo earlier this month, there will be further protests on Wednesday 20th September and Thursday 21st September across Lomé, Togo and other
towns. There will be large crowds in public areas and a large security force presence.
Security forces have previously used lethal force as well as riot control tactics with tear gas to disperse demonstrators, so all areas with large gatherings of crowds should be avoided.
It is likely that communications will be shut down, including internet and SMS text messaging. Services such as email and Whatsapp will also be affected, as well as social media. All communications with local
agents should be followed up to ensure receipt.
As security forces and law enforcement will be focused on shore based matters, all vessels should operate at a higher level of security. In the event of a maritime security incident response times may be
extremely slow, or non-existent.
Any crew transferring through Lomé port should be briefed on the current situation, and should avoid large crowds of people due to the risk of being caught up in confrontations between civilians and security
forces.
