1. LR apologises for its role in the slave trade. British class society Lloyd’s Register (LR) has apologised for its role in the transatlantic trafficking of enslaved African people following a re-examining of its history and involvement in these acts.Britain was a major participant in the transatlantic trafficking of enslaved African people. From 1640 to 1807, British ships made around 10,000 voyages, forcibly taking and transporting about 3.4m people, 800,000 of whom died in transit.

2. Final call for IMO-WISTA International survey to count on gender diversity progress. Further improving maritime gender diversity will take action as well as attitude, writes WISTA International President Elpi Petraki, in a final call for submissions to the Women in Maritime survey.

3. Russian oil tankers still under construction included in U.S. sanctions. Six Russian oil tankers still under construction by Russia’s Zvezda shipyard were included in U.S. sanctions imposed last week, the first time Washington is known to have banned tankers before they even set sail, much less carried sanctioned cargo.

4. Strong growth momentum for Maritime Singapore. Singapore’s annual vessel arrival tonnage, total tonnage of ships under the Singapore flag, container throughput, total bunker sales, and sales of alternative bunker fuels, reached new highs in 2024. Cargo throughput handled at the port of Singapore also increased in 2024. These were among some of the announcements by Mr Murali Pillai, Minister of State for Law and Transport, at the annual Singapore Maritime Foundation (SMF) New Year Conversations event today.

5. Maritime efficiency critical as industry faces new IMO environmental measures. Efficiency measures must be applied to the existing fleet to meet IMO Mid-Term GHG reduction measures, says a new publication from the Maritime Emissions Reduction Centre (MERC). By enhancing efficiency, the maritime industry can reduce the amount of alternative low-GHG fuels required, thereby lowering the overall cost of the energy transition, outlines the report.

6. MOL and Marubeni to establish a new company venture in the nature-based carbon removal credit business. Open the Way to a Sustainable Future Through the Power of People and Forest-
Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, and Marubeni Corporation announced  that the two companies have entered into a shareholders agreement to jointly establish a new company, called Marubeni MOL Forests  to create, purchase, sell, and retire nature-based carbon removal credits.

7. Havila Shipping disputes lenders’ allegations of default. Norwegian OSV owner and operator Havila Shipping is disputing allegations of default that have been made by three different banks.
As part of Havila’s restructuring deal, three banks and bondholders had planned to have their debt settled by the end of 2024. Alongside this, these banks decided to extend the agreement for another year related to two vessels in operation and four sold vessels.

8. Medkon takes another Contships vessel. The aggressive fleet buildup seen at Medkon Lines of Turkey shows no sign of slowing with Alphaliner reporting it has bought its ninth secondhand container vessel in the space of less than a year. The Medkon fleet now stands at 23 ships.

9. Trump Designates Lou Sola as New Federal Maritime Commission Chairman. President Donald J. Trump has appointed Commissioner Louis E. “Lou” Sola as the new Chairman of the Federal Maritime Commission, the independent federal agency responsible for regulating the international ocean transportation system.

10. Shipping Giant MSC Says It Will Keep Avoiding Red Sea for Now. Container liner MSC Mediterranean Shipping Co. SA said it will continue to send its ships around Africa’s southern tip until further notice, a sign that any resumption to normal trade flows through the Red Sea is not imminent.
