2. Oldendorff successfully installs Flettner Rotors. Oldendorff Carriers (Oldendorff) is pleased to announce the successful installation and operational deployment of Rotor Sails on the Chinook Oldendorff. Through a joint agreement first announced in December 2023, the Chinook Oldendorff transports Elk Valley Resources (EVR) steelmaking coal from the Port of Vancouver to customers across the Pacific Ocean.

3. The principles and implications of General Average are not always fully understood by the offshore sector, warns the AAA. At a recent seminar in London organised by the International Underwriting Association of London  and the Association of Average Adjusters, participants heard how ignoring or not fully understanding the concept of General Average ) when concluding charter-party contracts for offshore services could cause problems in the event of an incident or accident.

5. Bethann Rooney named 2025 person of the year by NY/NJ foreign Freight Forwarders & Brokers Association. Bethann Rooney, Port Director of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, has been named the 2025 Person of the Year by the New York/New Jersey Foreign Freight Forwarders and Brokers Association . She will receive the prestigious award at the association’s 107th Annual Dinner Gala, scheduled for February 6, 2025, at the Marriott Marquis in New York City.

6. Scrubber installation costs plummet. In just over a month it will be the fifth anniversary of the global sulphur cap, and debate continues to rage about the environmental benefits brought about by the regulation and the subsequent mass adoption of scrubbers.
Shipowners continue to favour scrubbers for large newbuilds, with the price of installation dropping dramatically recently.

7. Ship engines develop allergy to cashew nut fuel. Shipowners have been told to avoid selecting fuel made from cashew nutshells, a niche fuel that has been found to cause problems in engine rooms. 
Bunker fuel tester CTI-Maritec has reported that several ships fuelling up in Singapore and Rotterdam have reported operational problems including fuel sludging, injector failure, filter clogging, system deposits and corrosion of turbocharger nozzle rings.

8. Spliethoff targeted by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority. The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) has banned the Netherlands-flagged general cargo ship Marsgracht from entering Australian ports for 180 days following two incidents this year where the vessel was found to have wrongly stowed dangerous goods contrary to the International Maritime Organization’s International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) Code.

10. London Gateway Tapped as Gemini Cooperation’s UK Hub as Felixstowe Misses Out. Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd have selected London Gateway as their primary UK hub for the upcoming Gemini Cooperation, set to launch on February 1, 2025.
As part of a broader network optimization initiative, this strategic decision will remove Felixstowe—the UK’s largest container port—from the shared Gemini network’s Asia-Europe services.
