1. Regional sulphur emission limits at a glance. From time to time Members and clients contact Gard and ask for advice when a ship has been fined for burning non-compliant fuel in a port or waters where special sulphur emission regulations apply. In some cases, ships may have unknowingly burned fuel with a sulphur content exceeding the permissible limit, e.g. because the bunker delivery note (BDN) was inaccurate.

2. Fewer tankers transit the Red Sea in 2024. The amount of crude oil and oil products flowing through the Bab el-Mandeb, the southern chokepoint at the mouth of the Red Sea, decreased by more than 50% in the first eight months of 2024.

4. Port of Newcastle Clean Energy Precinct reaches major milestone. Port of Newcastle’s Clean Energy Precinct has reached a major milestone, signing agreements for Front End Engineering Designs  and Environmental Impact Statements covering electrical infrastructure, water services, general infrastructure, storage, berth infrastructure, and pipelines to berth.

6. Two ships suffer damage in Russian strikes on Ukraine’s Odesa port. Two more vessels have been damaged in another Russian missile attack on Ukraine’s Black Sea port of Odesa.
A Belize-flagged 2,700 dwt general cargo ship NS Moon was hit yesterday while moored at the port, together with the Palau-flagged 5,800 dwt Optima, which sustained damage in a previous ballistic missile attack last week.

7. X-Press Feeders adds to methanol-ready 11,000 teu series. Liner operator X-Press Feeders is accelerating its fleet renewal programme with a series of neopanamax newbuilds in China. The Singapore-based carrier has returned to Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding for six methanol-ready and scrubber-fitted 11,000 teu ships scheduled for delivery between the third quarter of 2027 and the fourth quarter of 2028.

8. U-Ming signs for more New Dayang ultramaxes. Taiwanese dry bulk shipping operator U-Ming Marine Transport is expanding its fleet with a new series of ultramax newbuilds at Chinese builder New Dayang.The subsidiary of the Far Eastern Group has signed up for four additional vessels of the Crown 63 Plus design, the shipbuilding arm of state-run machinery manufacturer Sumec Group revealed at the naming ceremony of one of the four ultramaxes U-Ming booked for construction in 2022.

9. Cargo Ship ‘Pan Viva’ Weighs Anchor After Weathering Fierce Alaskan Storm. The cargo ship Pan Viva has successfully weathered a severe storm off the Alaskan coast and resumed its voyage, averting a potential environmental disaster and alleviating concerns of a possible grounding off Unalaska, Alaska.The U.S. Coast Guard confirmed on Tuesday that the vessel has weighed anchor and been cleared to return to sea.

10. Philippines Says Chinese ‘Maritime Militia’ Boat Sideswiped Fisheries Vessel. The Philippines‘ Bureau of Fisheries said a “Chinese maritime militia” boat deliberately sideswiped one of its two vessels that were patrolling near Thitu island in the contested waters of the South China Sea on Friday.
The vessel sustained dents in its starboard bow, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) said in a statement issued late on Monday.
