2. Russia expands Baltic ports as it eyes new grain markets. Russia, the world’s leading wheat exporter, is expanding its Baltic Sea ports as it aims to boost agricultural exports by 50% by 2030 while reducing dependence on traditional Black Sea routes, officials and executives said.

3. Navigating the new EU Regulations: What offshore vessel owners need to know. The maritime industry is facing significant regulatory changes aimed at reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The latest EU regulations, particularly the updated Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) requirements, are set to impact offshore vessels starting from January 1, 2025. These regulations mandate comprehensive emissions monitoring and reporting for vessels with a gross tonnage (GT) of 400 and above.

4. Trafigura secures USD32 billion-equivalent syndicated revolving credit facility and term loan facilities. Trafigura Group , a market leader in the global commodities industry, announced the closing of its new Syndicated Revolving Credit Facility  and Term Loan Facilities at approximately USD3.2 billion-equivalent. The Facilities were substantially oversubscribed and upsized from their initial launch amount of USD2.0 billion-equivalent, with 38 financial institutions participating in the transaction, including five new lenders.

5. Offshore vessel operators enjoy a ‘vintage year’ for deliveries. Strong confidence in the offshore vessel market has seen orders placed in the previous market upcycle re-activated to take advantage of renewed investor interest.
In its Q3 OSV sector report MSI notes that of the 17 vessels delivered to date in 2024, 13 were ordered more than a decade ago, leaving just over 50 vessels still pending from the previous upcycle, some of which are anticipated to be taken up by operators as newbuild options in the coming years.

6. Strike commences across US eastern seaboard. Around 45,000 dockworkers at 36 ports stretching from Maine to Texas across America’s eastern seaboard went on strike at midnight in the largest terminal industrial action seen anywhere in the world this century.The decision to down tools came despite a last ditch offer from employers for a near 50% pay increase, with the White House maintaining it will not step in to resolve the strike.

7. How to tackle harassment onboard. Whenever shipping is mentioned, outside shipping circles, it is always with the same clichés along the lines of shipping is the blood of the global economy or shipping carries over 90% of global trade volumes with the seaborne trade standing at around 11bn tons annually carried by around 55,000 vessels.

8. Tanker captain sent to prison, owner fined over US oil discharge case. The case involving Turkish owner Prive Shipping deliberately dumping oil from its tanker PS Dream was wrapped up with the company being fined $2m and given four years of probation while the captain of the vessel was sent to prison.
The companies pleaded guilty in May to charges of conspiracy, obstruction of justice, and violating the Act to Prevent Pollution from Ships (APPS).

9. No Deal to Avert Major U.S. Port Strike as Deadline Passes. Port workers with the International Longshoremen’s Association, the largest maritime union in the United States, appear set to go on strike for the first time since 1977 after they were unable to reach a new Master Contract agreement with employers at U.S. Atlantic and Gulf coast ports.

10. Zombie Tanker Turns Up at Northern Chinese Port Laden With Oil. Singapore-flagged oil tanker EM Longevity made its final voyage almost three years ago, after more than two decades at sea. Earlier this month, ship-tracking data showed it arriving at a Chinese port, loaded with crude and ready to discharge.
