1. CMA CGM moves to take over port operator Santos Brazil. French liner giant CMA CGM has laid the foundation for the takeover of Brazilian port terminal operator Santos Brasil Participacoes.
The Rodolphe Saadé-led carrier is buying a 48% stake for about $1.15bn with plans to launch an offer for Santos Brasil’s remaining shares after the initial transaction closes during the first quarter of 2025.

2. NASSCO Launches Fifth Fleet Oiler for U.S. Navy. General Dynamics NASSCO christened and launched the USNS Lucy Stone (T-AO 209), the fifth ship in the John Lewis-class fleet oiler program for the U.S. Navy.
The ceremony, taking place Saturday, marked a significant milestone in the ongoing partnership between NASSCO and the U.S. Navy, highlighting the importance of naval fleet replenishment capabilities.

3. Russia’s ‘Shadow Fleet’ Offloads Sanctioned LNG at Asian Storage Barge For First Time. The next element of Russia’s emerging LNG shadow fleet has materialized over the weekend. LNG carrier Everest Energy traveled to the Koryak FSU near the southern tip of Kamchatka to transfer super-chilled gas from the sanctioned Arctic LNG 2 project. Everest Energy had passed through the Arctic’s icy waters without a valid permit while traveling under a suspended registration by flag state Palau.

4. Officials Race to Contain Oil Spill Following Sinking of Passenger Vessel in Greenland. Emergency personnel in Greenland near the southern community of Nanortalik worked over the weekend to contain a 20,000 liters oil spill following the sinking of the small expedition passenger ship Adolf Jensen.
The vessel ran aground and subsequently sank last week at the mouth of the Tasermiut Fjord north of Nanortalik.

5. Deendayal Port Authority floats plan to build a second satellite facility costing Rs 20,000 crore. Deendayal Port Authority, the state-owned entity that runs the port located at Kandla in Gujarat’s Kutch district, has floated a plan to build a satellite port, its second, on a patch of land between the bulk cargo terminal run by Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd at Tuna-Tekra and Kandle Creek with an estimated cost of over Rs 20,000 crore, a top official has said.

6. India to buy more second-hand vessels to raise container capacity. India will purchase more second-hand vessels to add to the country’s container shipping capacity, two senior shipping officials said on Thursday after talks with multiple ministries to cut transportation costs and increase exports.
Discussions were held after Indian goods exports fell for two consecutive months, with a 9.3% year-on-year fall in August, which traders blamed on rising shipping costs, a slowdown in China and recessionary trends in Europe and the United States.

7. Malaysia becomes China’s No.2 crude oil supplier after Russia. China’s crude oil imports from Malaysia surged 31% in August from a year earlier, making it the country’s second-largest supplier after Russia, customs data showed, bucking a broader trend of slowing Chinese imports.

9. US sues Singaporean owner of cargo ship that wrecked Baltimore bridge. The U.S. Justice Department on Wednesday filed a civil claim seeking $103 million from the two Singaporean companies that owned and operated the container ship that in March toppled the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, killing six people and paralyzing a major transportation artery for the U.S. Northeast.

10. The bold EU’s 2040 climate target is indispensable for climate neutrality and economic competitiveness, says the EESC.
