1. WISTA International AGM & Conference 2024 – Countdown to milestone anniversary event. 2. The first green methanol-powered container ship, ECO UMANDE, at the Port of Riga. On 18 September, with the arrival of X-Press Feeders’ ship ECO UMANDE, the world’s largest independent container shipping company, the first green freight route from the Port of Riga has been ceremoniously launched — the Green Baltic X-PRESS (Rotterdam – Antwerp – Klaipeda – Riga – Rotterdam), where only green methanol-powered container ships will be used.

3. Action needed to meet growing demand for sustainable fuels on Rotterdam-Singapore shipping corridor. As the maritime industry accelerates efforts to decarbonise, the Rotterdam-Singapore Green and Digital Shipping Corridor (GDSC) is set to play a key role in reducing emissions from large container vessels. The potential demand for sustainable variants of methane and methanol for container vessels on the Rotterdam-Singapore route could reach up to 5 million tonnes per year in 2028. However, affordability and availability remain critical obstacles to unlocking this demand.

4. Governments expected to close in on a global carbon price at UN talks next week. The IMO is expected to advance negotiations on what could be the world’s first universal carbon price (e.g. a levy) on a global polluter. This policy sees consistent, growing support among the IMO’s 175 member states.

5. Danish Shipping adopts policy to avoid whale strikes. Each year, a significant number of whales die after being struck by ships. With its new policy, Danish Shipping aims to raise awareness of this issue and help reduce the risk of whale strikes.
The heavy traffic across the world’s oceans often poses a threat to the lives and health of whales.

6. Negotiators have one week to save US east coast from chaos. The entrenched sides are set, with government intimating it will not intervene, and the clock is ticking for what looks set to be Q4’s biggest supply chain upheaval – the shutdown of ports across the east and Gulf coasts of the United States.

7. FBI boards another Synergy-managed boxship in Baltimore. The Federal Bureau of Investigation and other agencies boarded another boxship managed by Synergy Marine at the port of Baltimore on Saturday morning, days after the Dali, this year’s most famous vessel accident, left American waters.

8. Ship struck by missile at Odesa port. A general cargo ship scheduled to transport metal pipes to Romania, under a supply contract with the United States was struck during a Russian ballistic missile attack at the port of Odesa on Friday, the second hit on an international merchant ship in the Black Sea this month. The 6,315 dwt vessel, the Golden Lion, sailing under the flag of Antigua and Barbuda, sustained damage, and two crew crew were injured. The missile strike also damaged infrastructure at the Ukrainian port.

10. ‘Doomsday’ Glacier Set To Melt Faster, Swell Seas As World Heats Up. Tidal action on the underside of the Thwaites Glacier in the Antarctic will “inexorably” accelerate melting this century, according to new research by British and American scientists. The researchers warn the faster melting could destabilize the entire West Antarctic Ice sheet, leading to its eventual collapse.
