1. Longshoremen at key US ports threatening to strike over automation and pay. Determined to thwart the automating of their jobs, about 45,000 dockworkers along the U.S. East and Gulf Coasts are threatening to strike on Oct. 1, a move that would shut down ports that handle about half the nation’s cargo from ships.

2. TotalEnergies will supply 1.1 million tons per year to BOTAŞ for 10 years for long term LNG sales in Türkiye. In line with its strategy to grow its long-term liquefied natural gas  sales, TotalEnergies announces the signing of a Heads of Agreement with BOTAŞ for the delivery of 1.1 million tons of LNG per year for ten years starting from 2027.

3. IMO’s Marine Environment Protection Committee MEPC 82 convene on key environmental issues. The International Maritime Organization’s Marine Environment Protection Committee  meets in-person for its 82nd session at IMO Headquarters in London from 30 September to 4 October, 2024.
MEPC 82 will discuss a range of environmental matters, including proposed mid-term measures for the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from ships, enhancing energy efficiency of shipping, tackling marine litter, ballast water management and underwater noise reduction.

4. Partners agree continuation of landmark collaboration for ammonia dual-fuel container ship. Lloyd’s Register , Mediterranean Shipping Company , Shanghai Merchant Ship Design & Research Institute  and MAN Energy Solutions have signed a new Memorandum of Understanding, which now includes the Liberian International Ship and Corporate Registry, to enhance the design for the ammonia dual-fuel operation of an 8200 TEU container ship

6. Spliethoff buys 30-ship-strong ForestWave. Two Dutch shipowners are merging with news from Amsterdam today that Spliethoff Group has acquired a majority shareholding in fellow multipurpose operator ForestWave for an undisclosed sum. The acquisition takes Spliethoff’s fleet to 147 vessels spread across seven brands which also include BigLift Shipping. ForestWave controls a fleet of 30 ships with an average age of 13 years. Founded in 2003, as well as its Dutch base it has offices in Spain and the UK.

7. Dali leaves US for repairs in China. Nearly six months after it made headlines around the world for bringing down Baltimore’s largest bridge, the Dali containership finally left American waters yesterday and is headed to Ningbo in China for further extensive repairs. 
The ship was escorted by the US Coast Guard and three tugs as it left Norfolk, Virginia yesterday, carrying no cargo. Its journey to China is expected to take 46 days.

8. Hafnia redomiciles from Bermuda to Singapore. Hafnia, the world’s largest product tanker owner, has been given the go-ahead to redomicile from Bermuda to Singapore. The BW Group affiliate expects the redomiciliation to come into effect by the start of next month. 
Shares in Hafnia commenced trading on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) this April, to go alongside an existing listing in Oslo.

9. Inland Waterways Authority of India successfully felicitates huge ODC cargo for Numaligarh Refinery. In yet another watershed moment in the logistics sector of Assam, the Inland Waterways Authority of India, the nodal agency of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, successfully felicitated one huge Over Dimensional Cargo (ODC), a Vacuum Tower, headed towards Numaligarh Refinery.

10. We want to increase the container carrying capacity of SCI,’ says CMD Capt Tyagi. 
State run Shipping Corporation of India Ltd (SCI) will initiate action to buy four more second hand container ships of various sizes to add to the one for which it had floated a tender earlier this year in a bid to help the nation’s exporters tide over the scarcity of space and lack of containers for shipping their goods, Chairman and Managing Director Captain Binesh Kumar Tyagi has said.
