1. NGOs take the EU Commission to Court over flawed sustainable finance criteria that label polluting planes and ships as green. A coalition of NGOs, backed by 35,000 concerned citizens, are taking the EU Commission to court over the decision to include polluting fossil fuel planes and ships in the EU’s flagship sustainable finance legislation, the EU Taxonomy. The coalition consists of Dryade, Fossielvrij NL, and Protect our Winters Austria, supported by legal experts Opportunity Green and CLAW.

2. Greece imports spot LNG cargo to meet power demand amid low renewables. The Palu LNG ship is headed to Greece to meet an increased gas demand for power as low renewables in the region pushed for spot LNG purchase.
The ship, which loaded at Sabine Pass Aug. 9, according to S&P Global Commodities at Sea, unloaded a partial cargo at Cartagena (Spain) Aug. 24 and is now heading to Greece’s Revithoussa terminal.

3. Australia increases its trade relations with Valenciaport. The Port Authority of Valencia’s Statistical Bulletin for the month of June points out three areas of growth in the last six months: the Red Sea, the Baltic States and Australia. The changes in shipping lines’ routes caused by the war crisis explain the increases in traffic with the northern area of the Red Sea and the Baltic countries.

4. Active grain handling season has started at the Port of Riga. With the start of this year’s active grain handling season, the Port of Riga terminals began receiving and loading grain cargo of local origin at the end of July and the beginning of August. So far, more than 10 vessels with rapeseed and 3 bulk carriers with wheat have left the port berths with the new harvest on board. Riga port terminals are actively receiving grain from both Latvian and Lithuanian farmers.

5. First ever cargo vessel with wind assisted propulsion at SMM with bound4blue. This year’s SMM will be the first major maritime event to host a vessel featuring an advanced Wind Assisted Propulsion System (WAPS), with the 2,850 dwt “Eems Traveller” sailing in to dock at Überseebrücke, Hamburg, for the 3rd and 4th September.

7. Maersk vessel takes out tall ship and hits museum while entering Fremantle. Australia’s largest sail-training tall ship was badly damaged this morning as it was struck by the 8,814 teu Maersk Shekou. The boxship also hit the Western Australian Maritime Museum while entering the inner harbour of Fremantle port this morning.

8. New Bedford Foss Marine Terminal Opens Deep Water Berth for Offshore Wind Industry. The New Bedford Foss Marine Terminal (NBFMT) has opened its first deep water berth after two years of construction, marking a significant step in supporting North America’s emerging wind energy sector. The berth, part of Phase II of the project, is specifically designed to accommodate offshore wind service vessels and includes a 300-foot bulkhead.

9. NTSB Investigation Reveals Hull Deficiencies in Towing Vessel Sinking. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has concluded its investigation into the partial sinking of a towing vessel on the Lower Mississippi River near Ascension Parish, Louisiana, in March 2023.Investigators discovered significant hull damage that led to the vessel’s flooding.

10. Calcutta port announces launch of cargo services between Haldia and UAE. The Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Calcutta (SMP, Calcutta) on Thursday announced the launch of the Bengal Middle East Express (BMEx), a new container vessel service connecting Haldia Dock Complex (HDC) with Jebel Ali Port in the UAE.The BMEx service will operate on Haldia-Chittagong-Jebel Ali-Haldia route, linking Bengal and the eastern Indian industrial hub with a key Middle East port.
