OSM Thome introduces pioneering AI Tool for SMS success “Ask OSM Thome”

OSM Thome announced the launch of “Ask OSM Thome,” a generative AI tool based on OpenAI’s ChatGPT model, integrated via Microsoft, to revolutionise how our teams access information about our Safety Management Systems (SMS) for our managed vessels. This tool, designed to provide a chatbot experience through MS Teams on both desktop and mobile platforms, aims to streamline and enhance our operational efficiency and safety compliance.

Our SMSs are extensive, designed to comprehensively address operational risks and ensure consistent application of company policies. However, the sheer volume of documentation across three different SMSs for each division within our Technical Management business unit has made it cumbersome and time-consuming to navigate. This vast knowledge base, while essential, requires a more efficient means of access.

“Ask OSM Thome” leverages natural language processing to provide near-instant access to our SMS knowledge base, significantly reducing the time required to find information. By integrating this tool with MS Teams, we ensure that our teams can access the information they need, whether onshore or onboard, through a familiar and convenient interface.

The implementation of this AI tool is expected to enhance compliance by making it easier to access SMS information, improve safety through quick access to critical information, increase efficiency by reducing the time spent searching for information, and ensure consistency in operations across all divisions and vessels. It is crucial to note that “Ask OSM Thome” is designed to facilitate faster access to knowledge, not to make decisions on behalf of our personnel. Our trained, skilled, competent, and experienced operational personnel will continue to make decisions based on the information provided by the tool.

During development and deployment, the tool underwent extensive user testing to ensure the highest possible accuracy. The project was managed by Sunit Sikand, who will continue to drive this initiative forward together with the project team following this initial deployment.

To ensure a smooth transition, we have provided our staff with user guides and conducted familiarization sessions as part of our management of change procedure. To date, we have deployed the tool globally to all TM locations and three ships, with the intention to continue deployment across our TM managed fleet.
