2. Possible US seaport strike could back up goods for months, shipping experts say. A potential strike at U.S. seaports on the East Coast and Gulf of Mexico could back up cargo there for weeks or even months, shipping experts said on Wednesday.

3. Will HMM continue to transport EVs, batteries by sea? HMM, the largest container shipping company in Korea, is facing a dilemma as to whether to continue transporting electric vehicles (EVs) and batteries containing lithium due to safety concerns. Amid the recent trend of local car ferries refusing to transport EVs to mitigate fire risks, attention has been focused on whether HMM will put all types of battery-powered vehicles on its prohibited cargo list.

4. Indian port workers to go on strike to demand better wages, benefits. A group of Indian port workers’ unions has called for a strike from Aug. 28 to demand immediate settlement of pay revisions and pension benefits, according to a note signed by its members.
A strike by India’s port workers could exacerbate the existing congestion issues at Asian and European ports, leading to further delayed shipments, which have a global impact on trade and commerce.

5. World’s first Machine Room Safety Accreditation for Ammonia Fueled Ammonia Gas Carrier to Be Granted by ClassNK. The world’s first accreditation* for “Machinery Room Safety for Ammonia” (MRS) will be granted by ClassNK for the ammonia-fueled medium gas carrier (AFMGC) currently being developed by a consortium that includes Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK) and Nihon Shipyard Co., Ltd. (NSY). MRS is Class notation** demonstrating a ship is equipped with excellent ammonia safety measures for the machinery room. MRS also confirms the vessel meets the highest safety measures under the guidelines for ammonia-fueled ships.

6. Wind-assisted propulsion nears ‘tipping point’ for rapid adoption. The application of wind-assisted propulsion systems (WAPSs) across a variety of vessel types is nearing a “tipping point” with deployment likely to increase rapidly, according to a new study from Lloyd’s Register. The British classification society is warning however that the lack of standardisation for verifying fuel savings and concerns about equipment availability need to be addressed.

10. China Deploys Three Icebreakers to Arctic as U.S. Presence Suffers After ‘Healy’ Fire. China continues to push ahead with the rapid expansion of its Arctic-capable fleet. For the first time it has dispatched three icebreaking vessels into the region this summer.
The U.S., meanwhile, will remain without surface presence in the Arctic for the remainder of the year, possibly longer. Following last month’s fire aboard Coast Guard icebreaker Healy the vessel had to abort its Arctic patrol returning back to its homeport Seattle on a single engine. The only other USCG icebreaker, Polar Star, remains currently dry docked in an attempt to squeeze a few more years of service life out of the 55-year old vessel.
