3. MarinePALS to make subscription videos freely available to aid with seafarers’ safety. Recent data from the ship management association InterManager, submitted to the IMO in a recent paper (III-10-INF.18), highlights a concerning trend: in 2023 more than 30 seafarers lost their lives due to asphyxiation in enclosed spaces. This figure marks the second-highest annual number of fatalities recorded in nearly three decades. Most of these tragic incidents occurred during planned work, underscoring the need for comprehensive training and heightened safety measures.

6. Secondhand dry bulker sales on track to smash records. Secondhand dry bulker sales are firmly on track to smash records this year. The latest data from Clarksons Research shows 542 vessels of a combined 40.3m dwt have been sold in the year to date, 17% above the 2023 run rate and on pace to exceed the record level of sale and purchase activity seen in 2021.

7. MOL steps deeper into cow dung. Japan’s largest shipping company has headed to the pastures in the north of the country to source its next alternative fuel. Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL) is teaming with a local town on Hokkaido island, as well as a dairy farm, and a gas provider to study the production and utilisation of biomethane made from animal manure.

8. Another CMA CGM ship loses containers off South Africa. Adverse weather conditions have led to yet another large container vessel losing 99 containers off the east coast of South Africa, according to the South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA).In response, a navigational warning to sailing vessels has been issued and a public call made to report any sighting of the cargo containers possibly still floating at sea.
