1. Seaspan contracts for 27 containership newbuilds. Seaspan Corporation has returned to shipbuilding in style with a large order for a series of 27 dual-fuel vessels.
Parent company Atlas revealed a new building programme in a filing to the US Securities and Exchange Commission that covers ships ranging in capacity from 9,000 teu up to 17,000 teu.

2. Navigator invests in US ammonia project. Handysize gas carrier owner and operator Navigator Holding is investing in clean ammonia developer Ten08 focused on an industrial scale, hybrid blue-and-green ammonia production facility on the Gulf coast of Texas. Ten08 aims to produce ultra-low carbon ammonia to cover the needs of power, shipping, fertilizer, and chemicals industries. The first phase expected to kickstart in late 2029 or early 2030 should deliver about 1.4m metric tonnes per year.

3. New ship repair yard opens in China. A new Chinese ship repair yard was officially opened this week, capable of handling 120 ships a year, further adding to the nationā€™s dominance in the repair segment. The new yard is a joint venture between Shanghai COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry and Jiangsu Watts Energy & Engineering, located in Qidong, some 50 km north of Shanghai.

4. Massive explosion rocks Yang Ming boxship at berth in Ningbo. An explosion occurred on the boxship YM Mobility at a container terminal in the Beilun Port area of ā€‹ā€‹Zhoushan Port. The cause of the accident was initially determined to be an explosion of a container on the ship, and there were no reports of casualties.

5. Delta suezmax attacked four times in 24 hours by the Houthis. Delta Blue, a suezmax belonging to Greeceā€™s Delta Tankers, has been attacked four times in the space of 24 hours by the Houthis.While the Houthis have targeted more than 120 ships in their 10-month campaign in solidarity with Palestinians, the targeting of the Delta Blue stands out for the repeated attempts and the use of rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs).

6. Blink and Youā€™ll Miss It: Russia Deploys Second ā€˜Stealthā€™ LNG Tanker to Sanctioned Gas Project. Russia continues its game of Arctic hide and seek attempting to dispatch LNG carriers undetected to its sanctioned Arctic LNG 2 gas project. Following an initial visit by LNG tanker Pioneer last week, a second vessel has now called at the facility new satellite images reveal.

7. Ukraine Says It Hit An Offshore Gas Platform Used By Russian Forces. Ukraineā€™s navy and military intelligence have attacked and damaged a former offshore gas platform used by Russian forces in the Black Sea, the navy spokesman said on Saturday.
ā€œThe occupiers used this location for GPS spoofing to make civilian navigation dangerous. We cannot allow this to happen,ā€ Dmytro Pletenchuk said on Facebook.

9. Report finds US container imports could approach monthly record. The threat of a strike by longshore workers at U.S. ports could swell import container traffic to ā€œa near-record surgeā€ as shippers look to get holiday goods ashore in August. Fresh off Juneā€™s early peak shipping season for end-of-year holiday merchandise, the latest Global Port Tracker indicates container traffic approaching record monthly levels as retailers bring in merchandise ahead of a potential job action at East Coast and Gulf Coast ports this fall, according to the report by the National Retail Federation and Hackett Associates.

10. Iran’s oil finds new destinations in Tehran export push, sources say.Ā 
Iran has sent small shipments of crude oil to new destinations such as Bangladesh and Oman, according to shipping sources and data, the latest sign of Tehran pushing to sustain output at close to its highest in five years. Oil sales are Iran’s major revenue source and the country has been looking for ways to sidestep U.S. sanctions on its crude exports that former president Donald Trump re-imposed in 2018 over Tehran’s nuclear programme.
