1. New England given $390m grant for offshore wind infrastructure upgrades. New England has been awarded a $390m federal grant to upgrade the infrastructure connecting offshore wind farms to the electric grid.The Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources submitted the Power Up New England project on behalf of all six New England states – Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island.

2. Bulker owner United Maritime branches out into offshore sector with newbuild investment. Nasdaq-listed Greek bulker owner United Maritime has marked its entry into the offshore support segment with an investment in newbuild energy construction vessel (ECV).
The Stamatis Tsantanis-led spinoff of Seanergy Maritime has acquired a minority stake in a Norwegian-based vehicle that will see the ECV earmarked for offshore wind and subsea markets delivered in the second quarter of 2027.

3. Sea1 Offshore taking Viking Supply Ships AHTS fleet under management. Norwegian offshore vessel operator Sea1 Offshore has announced it would be signing management agreements for all six anchor handler vessels owned by Viking Supply Ships.
Viking Supply Ships currently owns the Magne Viking, Odin Viking, Loke Viking, Njord Viking, Brage Viking, and Andreas Viking AHTS vessels.

4. Taiwan awards 2.7GW to five projects in latest offshore wind round. Taiwan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) has revealed the winners of the latest offshore wind tender round which were awarded 2.7 GW in total generation capacity. The country’s authorities revealed that five projects were among the winners of the offshore wind auction, named Round 3.2.

5. Supply chain chaos grips Bangladesh in wake of PM’s resignation. Supply chain chaos across Bangladesh, the world’s third-largest exporter of clothing, has created the longest berthing delays anywhere across the globe. Some 50 ships are queuing in a 25 nautical mile stretch outside Chattogram port (see map below) following weeks of protests, curfews, internet outages, all of which culminated yesterday in the resignation of Sheikh Hasina after 15 years of leading Bangladesh.

6. Hoegh Autoliners’ First Aurora Class PCTC Sets Sail. Höegh Autoliners has launched the first Aurora Class pure car and truck carrier (PCTC), Höegh Aurora, at China Merchants Heavy Industry’s yard in Jiangsu, China.
The new vessel aims to set a standard for sustainable deep-sea shipping, targeting a significant reduction in carbon emissions.

7. Tidewater Reports Robust Growth in Revenue and Day Rates. 
Tidewater Inc. (NYSE: TDW), a leading global provider of offshore service vessels (OSVs), reported strong financial results for Q2 2024, with a revenue of $339.2 million, a 5.6% increase from Q1.Key highlights included a higher average day rate of $21,130 and improved leading edge term contract rates across multiple vessel categories.

8. Port of Virginia Expands Rail Yard, Boosting Capacity By 31%. The Port of Virginia’s newly expanded central rail yard is now fully operational, significantly enhancing the port’s rail capacity to handle 2 million TEUs annually. The $83 million Central Rail Yard project is a key component of the larger $1.4 billion Gateway Investment Program aimed at fortifying the port’s infrastructure and capabilities.

9. Misguided Draft Guidance Causes Bulk Carrier Grounding in Lake Huron. Inadequate operating company guidance on underkeel clearance led to the grounding of a bulk carrier in Lake Huron in April 2023, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) reported on Tuesday.The John J Boland grounded twice while completing its final loading at Port Dolomite, Michigan, on April 21, 2023. After setting sail, the crew discovered flooding and hull damage.

10. Chennai’s Ports Struggle with Growing Congestion. 
A crisis looms on Chennai’s terminals as the city’s four private container terminals responsible for importing raw materials and exporting finished goods rapidly approach full capacity due to the clustering of arriving container ships, often without adequate notice .
