1. Adani to build port in Vietnam. India’s Adani Group has announced plans to construct a new port at the central Vietnamese city of Danang.  Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (APSEZ), the group’s port company, has secured an “in-principle approval from the Vietnamese government” for the greenfield project, according to Karan Adani, CEO of APSEZ.

2. Botswana signs coal export deal with Zimbabwe and Mozambique. Landlocked Botswana, which boasts the third largest coal reserves in Africa, has a potential new export route. Botswana has signed a deal with Zimbabwe and Mozambique to develop a massive rail and port project, albeit that financing is still not in place for the planned infrastructure.

3. Washington demands more information from Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd over Gemini creation. Throwing a kink in their launch plans, Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd have been asked to provide more information about the creation of the Gemini Cooperation.The two European containerlines are joining forces from next year to create a new liner grouping, which still needs regulatory approval from around the world.

4. Yemen’s Houthis Conduct Military Operations In Gulf Of Aden. Yemen’s Houthis said on Sunday they had conducted two military operations, one in the Gulf of Aden and one in Eilat at the southern tip of Israel. Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree said the group had targeted the Israeli ship MSC UNIFIC in the Gulf of Aden with ballistic missiles and drones in addition to attacking military targets in Eilat with drones.

5. Chinese And Russian Naval Forces Hold Joint Operation In Pacific. Chinese and Russian naval forces recently conducted another round of joint exercises, according to China’s Ministry of Defense.It was the fourth joint operation and took place in the western and northern Pacific Ocean, the ministry said in a statement, without providing further details.

9. Ukraine seizes cargo ship, detains captain for exporting ‘looted’ grain. Ukraine seized a foreign cargo ship on the Danube River and detained the captain on suspicion of helping Moscow export Ukrainian grain from Russian-occupied Crimea, officials said on Thursday.
Kyiv has accused Russia of trading stolen Ukrainian grain since the 2022 war began. Ship seizures, however, have been rare and shipping sources said they were concerned about possible retaliation at a critical time in the year as Ukraine grain exports reach a peak.

10. Diana Shipping announces time charter contract for m/v Atalandi with Cargill. Diana Shipping , a global shipping company specializing in the ownership and bareboat charter-in of dry bulk vessels,  announced that, through a separate wholly-owned subsidiary, it has entered into a time charter contract with Cargill International S.A., Geneva, for one of its Ice Class Panamax dry bulk vessels, the m/v Atalandi. The gross charter rate is US$14,600 per day, minus a 4.75% commission paid to third parties, for a period until minimum June 1, 2025 up to maximum July 31, 2025. The charter is expected to commence on July 19, 2024.
