1. African flags flying high in the dark fleet era. The remarkable rise of a number of African flags providing services to the so-called dark fleet shows no sign of slowing. Gabon has become a top 30 shipping register this year, according to Clarksons Research, its fleet growing by 122% in 2024 to 6.9m gt, of which 6.3m are tankers. A month prior to Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine 28 months ago, the African nation had just 0.8m gt on its books.

2. Missile Attack Confirmed in Arabian Sea. A merchant vessel in the Arabian Sea reported an explosion in close proximity to it on Monday, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) said. UKMTO said the crew was reported safe and the vessel was proceeding to its next port of call.

3. EU Targets Russia’s Dark Fleet in Latest Sanctions. For the first time the EU is targeting specific vessels part of Russia’s dark fleet created to circumvent the oil price caps. In total the latest measures include designation of eleven crude oil carriers and five oil product tankers.

5. NTSB Provides Update on Dali Crash Investigation. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has released an update regarding its investigation into loss of power on board the containership Dali and its subsequent allision with Baltimore Francis Scott Key Bridge. The update from NTSB is part of an ongoing investigation and does not contain any conclusions about the cause of the incident.

7. Container rate surge enters longest stretch since the pandemic. The spot rate for shipping goods in containers to Europe from Asia rose for a ninth straight week, the longest stretch of rising prices since the pandemic disrupted global supply chains in 2021. The rate for a 40-foot container to Genoa, Italy, from China hit $7,029 over the past week, the highest level since September 2022, according to the Drewry World Container Index released Thursday. The cost to Rotterdam increased to $6,867. Both rates have essentially doubled since April.

8. Women strengthen skills in port management. Female maritime officials from 26 countries have completed intensive training to boost their skills in managing and operating ports. The 21st Women in Port Management seminar, sponsored by IMO and organized in collaboration with France’s leading port, HAROPA Port, was delivered by the Institut Portuaire d’Enseignement et de Recherche (IPER) from 10 to 21 June in Le Havre, France.
