1. Sanctioned tankers pose rising environmental risk in Mediterranean, Greece says Unregulated tankers sidestepping Western sanctions are posing a bigger risk to the Mediterranean region and Greece isundertaking more protective measures to safeguard its coast, the country’s shipping minister told Reuters on Tuesday. Up to 850 oil tankers are estimated toform the so-called shadow fleet transporting oil from countries such as Iran and Venezuela as well as Russia, which has multiple restrictions on its oil exports.

Moller – Maersk , a global leader in integrated logistics, celebrated the 100th anniversary of its first call in Japan with its long-standing partner Mitsubishi Logistics Corporation. In 1924, the first Maersk vessel, “LEISE MAERSK” called Yokohama, Japan, kicked off a century of Maersk’s development in the country. Mitsubishi Logistics Corporation’s collaboration with Maersk can be traced back to 1928 when it became Maersk’s local agency for the Japanese market.

World Bank report APM Terminals operational in six of top 10 most efficient container ports in the world The CPPI, developed by the World Bank and S&P Global Market Intelligence, is based on an extensive dataset from 405 ports worldwide, the largest to date. Time stamps from 10 of the world’s largest liner shipping companies, which collectively operate almost 80 percent of global container shipping, are collected. This equates to over 182,000 vessel calls, 238.2 million moves, and approximately 381 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) for the full calendar year of 2023.

7. Containers rolled as spot rates climb to dizzying heights Container rates continue to soar with shippers increasingly anxious about cargoes being rolled. The Shanghai Containerized Freight Index (SCFI), out today, was up by another 140 points to 3184.87, its highest level since August 2022, while Drewry’s composite World Container Index, published yesterday, jumped 12% to $4,716 per feu, up 181% compared to the same week last year. The Drewry index stands at 232% more than the average 2019, pre-pandemic rates of $1,420.

8. LNG to reduce Australian export emissions 
In November 2023 Pilbara Clean Fuels (PCF), Oceania and RINA signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on studies to define the commercial and emissions reduction benefits their combined concepts could deliver to ship owners and charterers for the Pilbara to Asia dry-bulk minerals export trade route. The Joint Study has since been completed.

9. Chinese Fighter Jets Approached Dutch Ship ‘Unsafely’, Netherlands Says Chinese air force jets circled a Dutch frigate and approached a Dutch helicopter in the East China Sea in a way that “caused a potentially unsafe situation,” the Netherlands’ Defense Ministry said on Saturday. In a statement, the Ministry said the HNLMS Tromp was patrolling on Friday in support of U.N. sanctions against North Korea when it was circled several times by two Chinese fighter jets.

10. Finland Wants EU Oil-Spill Vessel To Counter Shadow Fleet Risks Finland called for the European Union to procure a vessel to be on standby for oil spills in the northern parts of the Baltic Sea, as Russian crude transports are posing a growing threat in the region. The risk of oil spills in the area has increased after international sanctions forced Russia to transport oil using older vessels with weaker insurance coverage, according to a statement from Finland’s Transport and Communications Ministry. Harsh winter conditions also increase those risks as Russian vessels in the so-called shadow fleet may be “poorly equipped and not suited for icy conditions,” it said.
