Strongest seafarer wage increase: China China has seen the strongest increase in seafarer wages across the main seafaring countries in international shipping in recent years, according to the latest Manning Annual Review and Forecast report published by global shipping consultancy Drewry.China is a large and, more importantly, growing supply source of seafarers. It maintains its position as the second-largest supplier of seafarers to international merchant shipping, accounting for around 11% of the total sea-based workforce.

Idan Ofer cuts ZIM exposure Kenon Holdings, controlled by major shipowner Idan Ofer, has sold 5m shares of Israeli carrier ZIM as well as entering into a collar to potentially sell a further 5m shares. Following the official 5m share sale for $110.6m, Kenon’s stake falls from 20.6% to 16.5%. The collar transaction has a two-year term with settlement either in cash or in the ZIM shares.

Russia and China to form Arctic liner Russia is pressing ahead in a project with the Chinese to make all-year container shipping voyages along the Northern Sea Route (NSR) possible. Rosatom, which oversees the NSR, and China’s NewNew Shipping are forming a joint venture to develop a fleet of five ice-classed boxships which will work all year round.

Two Vessels Catch Fire After Missile Strikes Off Yemen’s Aden Two ships caught on fire after being hit by projectiles off Yemen’s Aden, two UK maritime agencies reported on Sunday. The British security firm Ambrey said on Sunday an Antigua- and Barbuda-flagged general cargo ship was struck by a missile 83 nautical miles southeast of Aden and caught fire. The fire was later contained.
