1. Cyprus Ministry of Education, Sport and Youth Research Competition Award Ceremony. The award ceremony for the MIEEK PSM Research Competition “Rethinking Supplier Assessment Criteria in the Post-Pandemic World” was organised by the Programs of Studies “Supply Chain Management and Maritime Studies” and “Culinary Arts and Restaurant Service” on Wednesday, 26 April 2023. The programs are offered by the Higher School of Vocational Education and Training of the Ministry of Education, Sport and Youth, MIEEK.
2. Baseblue Conference Explores the Future of Bunkering and Alternative Fuels. Baseblue, the global marine energy solution provider, recently hosted a successful conference titled “The Future of Bunkering 2023 and Beyond” as part of the 10th East Med Expo. The conference featured expert panels and discussions on the role of bunkering in the transition towards a sustainable future, with a particular focus on alternative fuels.
3. Cyprus actively represented at the Delphi Economic Forum by Philippos Philis and Despina Panayiotou Theodosiou. In the context of the Delphi Economic Forum VIII, Cyprus through two important maritime personalities Philippos Philis (ECSA President) and Despina Panayiotou Theodosiou (CEO Tototheo Maritime | Immediate Past President WISTA International) sent its messages from Delphi Greece.In particular, Cyprus representatives talked about the various challenges the shipping sector faces at both European and global level, emphasising the strategic importance of Cyprus shipping and the commitment of the shipping sector to its decarbonisation.
4. “Cyprus a location for shipping companies and financing”- presentation of Dr. Niels Hartmann at the Cyprus Marine Club members’ event. On 26th April 2023, the Cyprus Marine Club held an event with a presentation from Dr. Niels Hartmann under the title:- “ Cyprus as a location for shipping companies and financing”.Dr. Niels Hartmann is the Chief Executive Officer and board member of the Hartmann Group and founding member of Pelagic Partners. The Hartmann Group is a German independent, family-owned shipping company, managing and operating a fleet of around 150 ships between owned and third-party tonnage.
5. Tanker markets at decades-high: Danish Ship Finance. Danish Ship Finance has published its latest keenly awaited biannual shipping markets report, backing up coverage led by Splash Extrathat suggests the tanker trades are on course for their best earnings this century.The influential report, which tends to be read by thousands within the industry, covers all the main sectors, but reserves its most glowing commentary for the crude and product trades, which it says are positioned for an “extraordinary” earnings season this year and next.
6. New by name: China’s latest liner entrant makes waves. Newnew is a subsidiary of Torgmoll, a logistics group, with Alphaliner reporting it has recently bought the 3,700 teu, 2007-built Northern Debonair for $15m from German interests. This is the third ship Newnew has bought in recent months and will serve on the company’s China- Baltic & Black Sea service. Newnew also has a China – Russia Far East service.
7. Burning Tanker off Malaysia Sounds Shadow Fleet Alarm Bells. Three crew members are missingfrom a Gabon-registered tanker that caught fire on Monday in the South China Sea, a Malaysian maritime enforcement agency official said on Tuesday.The Pablo, an Aframax-class crude oil tanker whose insurers are unknown, was traveling from China and was empty, according to ship-tracking data compiled by Bloomberg. The ship is designed to hold about 700,000 barrels of oil when full.
8. US Coast Guard Helicopter Has Close Call During Harrowing Heavy Weather Medevac. A dramatic rescue attempt took place over the weekend as a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter battled harsh weather conditions during a medevac operation approximately 300 miles off the coast of Fort Morgan, Alabama. Passengers aboard the cruise ship captured footage of the harrowing incident, which has since been shared online.
9. Gordon Lightfoot Has Crossed The Bar: A Musical Beacon for Maritime History And Merchant Mariners. Gordon Lightfoot, the iconic Canadian singer-songwriter who captivated generations with his evocative storytelling and unique musical stylings, passed away yesterday at the age of 84. His maritime work, particularly the haunting ballad “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald” and his unwavering support for merchant mariners, will forever serve as a testament to his profound impact on both the musical world and maritime history.
10. Baltic index falls on lower vessel demand. The Baltic Exchange’s main sea freight index, which tracks rates for ships carrying dry bulk commodities, fell on Tuesday, pressured by lower shipping rates across all vessel segments.The overall index, which factors in rates for capesize, panamax and supramax shipping vessels, dropped 24 points, or 1.5%, to 1,552 – its biggest dip in two weeks.
