Capesize second-hand prices surge 22% m/m as rates rebound “In March 2023 China’s economic recovery caused a pick-up in capesize freight rates and in sale and purchase activity for this ship type. 4. Xeneta names Yang Ming container industry’s ’emission hero’ for Q4 2022. Analysis of Xeneta’s Carbon Emissions Index has revealed that Yang Ming is the container industry’s ‘emission hero’ for all relevant CEI-covered trades in Q4 2022. The Taiwanese giant was the industry’s only major player to score below the CEI performance baseline of 100 across all CEI routes. According to the CEI, a unique solution from Xeneta and Marine Benchmark, Yang Ming found the industry’s best balance between sailing speed, fill factor and vessel size. 5. Syrian crew die as elderly ship sinks off Turkish coast. A 30-year-old Guinea-Bissau flagged general cargo ship with 14 Syrian crew sank off Turkey’s Mediterranean coast early on Wednesday morning, killing at least three of them. Eight people were rescued while efforts continued to find the other missing crew. 6. China launches ship inspection campaign in the Taiwan Strait. Commercial maritime traffic along one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes face a tense few days ahead. China’s Fujian maritime safety administration has launched a three-day special joint patrol and inspection operation in the central and northern parts of the Taiwan Strait that includes moves to board ships. 7. First US-Built Offshore Wind SOV Taking Shape in Louisiana. The first offshore wind service operations vessel (SOV) built in the United States is taking shape.The 262-foot long SOV, named ECO Edison, is being built by Edison Chouest Offshore (ECO) at its shipyard in Louisiana.This week, senior executives from Ørsted and Eversource visited the shipyard to tour the progress of the vessel, which is now 50% complete. 8. Vantage Drilling Said to be Weighing Sale. Vantage Drilling International is exploring strategic options including a potential sale, according to people familiar with the matter. The offshore drilling contractor is working with a financial adviser, said the people, who asked to not be identified because the matter isn’t public. 9. Davie Secures Official Role in Canada’s National Shipbuilding Strategy. 10. Latest Wärtsilä engine platform selected for four new Erik Thun tankers. Technology group Wärtsilä will supply the engines for four new 7999 dwt chemical tankers being built for Swedish fleet owner Erik Thun. The ships will be constructed at the Ferus Smit shipyard in the Netherlands. The vessels will operate with the Wärtsilä 25 engine, the future-fuels ready latest addition to the company’s engine portfolio.
