5. Port of Everett opens first all-new cargo terminal on US West Coast since 2009

The Port of Everett last week officially opened its new Norton Terminal – the first all-new cargo terminal to open on the US West Coast in more than a decade.

The $40m maritime-infrastructure investment introduces 40 acres of new upland cargo capacity to the American freight network to enhance the movement of commerce through the global supply chain. It also nearly doubles the seaport’s cargo-handling footprint.

6. Rotterdam studies large-scale ammonia cracking for hydrogen imports

7. Coast Guard: Ever Forward Pilot Distracted By Cell Phone Prior to Grounding

The U.S. Coast Guard says the pilot of the containership Ever Forward was distracted by his cell phone when the 1,095-foot ship grounded in the Chesapeake Bay back in March, becoming stuck for more than a month before it was eventually refloated.

U.S. Coast Guard Sector Maryland-National Capitol Region completed its marine casualty investigation into the incident on Tuesday.

8. New Kite System for Ships Trialed on Transatlantic Voyage

France-based wind propulsion specialist Airseas is sharing the first footage of its automated kite system Seawing in use during transatlantic sea trials. The trial took place on board the roll-on/roll-off ship Ville de Bordeaux as it transported aircraft components between Europe and the United States. 9. Baltic index snaps 3-day losing streak on demand for larger vessels

The Baltic Exchange’s dry bulk sea freight index snapped its three-session losing streak on Tuesday, supported by higher rates for capesize and panamax vessels.
