1. European shipowners support EU parliamentary proposal on commercial operators and a sector-dedicated fund

European shipowners welcome the proposal of the European Parliament’s Rapporteur on the EU ETS, MEP Peter Liese, to introduce a requirement for a binding clause in contractual agreements between shipowners and commercial operators and to ensure that the latter pay for the costs of the EU ETS. In December 2021, NYK offered scholarships to 82 outstanding Chinese students at two maritime universities in China. This marked the 21st consecutive year for NYK to fund the education of students at these two universities. 5. MSC joins Lufthansa in bidding for Italy’s flagship airline

6. India fines Japanese car carrier operators over cartel claims

Car carrier cartel fines continue to make headlines around the world. 7. BSEE Issues Safety Recommendations Following Fatal Offshore Accidents

The U.S. Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE) has recommended added safety measures following the release of panel investigation reports into two unrelated fatal offshore accidents. 8. NATO Sends Reinforcements to Eastern Europe as Russia Accuses West of Hysteria

NATO said on Monday it was putting forces on standby and reinforcing eastern Europe with more ships and fighter jets, and could also send additional troops to its south-east flank, in what Russia denounced as an escalation of tensions over Ukraine. 10. Baltic Index Down For 12th Day On Lower Capesize Rates

The Baltic Exchange’s dry bulk sea freight index fell for a 12th straight session on Monday, hurt by declining capesize rates. The overall index, which factors in rates for capesize, panamax and supramax vessels, fell 24 points, or 1.7%, to 1,391, its lowest since mid-February 2021.
