1. Wallem Group selects ARI cloud-based Simulators to provide training for its crew
Wallem Group, a leading provider of technology driven maritime solutions, has selected cloud-based simulation from ARI Simulation to make training for its 7,000 seafarers more accessible and flexible. The use of advanced technology and an elevated focus on safety require shipping companies to continuously reassess training requirements and enhance the skills of seagoing personnel.

2. Anna Vourgos elected WISTA Cyprus President
Following the succesful completion of WISTA Cyprus 8th AGM & Elections, on the 27th of November, 2020, we would like to thank all members who have contributed to its’ succesful journey. 3. “Wind Hunter Project” Starts Zero-Emission Project with Wind Propulsion and Hydrogen
MOL announced that it has joined a wide-ranging corporate-academic partnership in a zero-emission initiative called the “Wind Hunter Project,” seeking new applications for hydrogen fuel and wind power.

4. Fair treatment of seafarers and the COVID-19 pandemic on Legal Committee’s agenda
The IMO Legal Committee has begun its 107thsession, meeting in virtual session (27 and 30 November and 1 December). Important items on its agenda include matters relating to the work of the Legal Committee and the COVID-19 pandemic and related agenda items on fair treatment of seafarers and the abandonment of seafarers.

5. Covid-19 sees vessel operating costs rise at their fastest pace in over a decade
Vessel operating costs have risen at their fastest pace in over a decade this year, on higher insurance cover premiums and Covid-19 related expenses, according to new research carried in shipping consultancy Drewry’s Ship Operating Costs Annual Review and Forecast 2020/21 report.

6. Deliver seafarers home for Christmas campaign launches
It’s the first of the month, advent calendars are being opened, Christmas trees decorated and presents bought. However, there are hundreds of thousands of men and women for whom the festive season spent with loved ones looks a distant dream.

7. Navy to Scrap USS Bonhomme Richard After Fire
The U.S. Navy has decided to scrap the amphibious landing dock USS Bonhomme Richard due to extensive damage from last July’s fire at Naval Base San Diego. The Navy said it came to the decision after an assessment concluded that the cost to restore the ship could be more than $3 billion and would take between five and seven years to complete.

8. Rescue Underway for Vendée Globe Skipper Who Abandoned Ship
A rescue is underway for a Vendée Globe skipper who activated his emergency beacon some 840 nautical miles southwest of Cape Town. Skipper Kevin Escoffier, 40, was racing in third place in the solo non-stop around the world race when his distress beacon was triggered Monday afternoon, forcing him to abandon his 60-foot racing boat in a life raft, race organizers said.

9. Grapevine: Vedanta, DP World Eye Shipping Corp; Shapoorji-ADIA Deal On Hold
Vedanta and Dubai’s DP World have shown interest in acquiring a stake in Shipping Corporation of India (SCI), The Economic Times said citing people familiar with the matter. The roadshows attracted up to 9 potential investors, including shipping companies from Norway and South Korea, the people said.

10. Baltic Index Posts Second Monthly Fall As Lower Capesize Rates Weigh
The Baltic Exchange’s main sea freight index edged lower on Monday, marking its second straight month of declines, as rates fell for the capesize vessel segment. The Baltic dry index, which tracks rates for capesize, panamax and supramax vessels, was down by 3 points, or 0.2%, at 1,227, snapping a nine-session rally. The index lost 4.4% this month.
