Current seafarer training is becoming out of step with the quantum leaps in technology seen onboard ships hitting the water these days, a senior figure at the US Coast Guard (USCG) has warned. Speaking at maritime training association GlobalMETâs annual conference in Mumbai on Friday, Mayte Medina, the head of the Office of Merchant Mariner Credentialing at the USCG, told delegates that "todayâs mariners are generalists, whereas tomorrowâs mariners need to be specialists". "Todayâs training processes and delivery systems need to change to meet tomorrowâs needs,â the 20-year veteran of the USCG said.

The UNCTAD Review of Maritime Transport 2017 offers a snapshot of the world fleet which, valued at $829 billion. The top five shipowners in terms of cargo carrying capacity (dwt) are Greece (309 million dwt), Japan, China, Germany and Singapore. Together, these five countries have a market share of 49.5 percent of dwt. Only one country from Latin America, Brazil, is among the top 35 shipowning countries; none are from Africa. In terms of vessel numbers, China is the leading shipowning country, the share of shipowning by the traditional maritime nations in Europe and North America has continued to decrease.
Cruise ship passenger Isabelle Lagace, 29, has been sentenced to 7.5 years in an Australian prison for attempting to import $21 million in cocaine in her baggage. In combination with drugs seized from her companions, it was the largest single cocaine bust on a passenger vessel in Australian history. Lagace, a Canadian national, arrived in Australia on the cruise ship Sea Princess on August 29, 2016, at the end of a world tour. She boarded in Dover and cruised to Ireland, Bermuda, Colombia, Panama, Ecuador, Peru and Chile, posting photos of her journey to her Instagram account along the way.
The 4,922-teu Iran-flagged containership "Touska" ran aground on a tiny islet off the southwest coast of main Hong Kong island on Sunday night. According to vessel tracking services, the fully laden IRISL-operated ship was in transit from Kaohsiung and bound for Shenzhen when it apparently strayed off the East Lamma Channel at about 2100 hrs, and ran aground on the well-marked Magazine Island to the north of the busy shipping lane, which comprises part of the traffic separation scheme leading into Hong Kong Port and the Pearl River Delta.
