Dispatches No. 324

Project MARTHA – FATIGUE AT SEA – delivered in IMO last Monday. Full report available from: http://www.intermanager.org/2013/12/martha/

………………….

Wednesday 8th February 2017, 1815 hrs.
Marlow Building, 13 Alexandrias Street, CY3720, Limassol ON BOARD FATIGUE – ARE WE, THE OFFICE STAFF PART OF THE PROBLEM? CAN WE BECOME A SOLUTION?

Ships’ crews are under increasing pressure from competitive voyage schedules and for carrying out their tasks with small crew complements. Evidence from accident records and research literature both point to the serious impact that fatigue may have on the safety and welfare on board.

Capt. Kuba Szymanski of InterManager and Prof. Mike Barnett of the Southampton Solent University will present the interesting results from the MARTHA project. This involved tools such as work/rest monitoring, seafarer interviews and weekly diaries. Hear about research findings on the development of fatigue and the effects. Followed by insights about possible solutions. MARTHA was conducted by an international partnership of researchers and the industry. The $3 million project was sponsored by the TK Foundation. (http://www.intermanager.org/2016/11/martha-is-length-of-time-at-sea-to-blame-for-seafarer-fatigue-2/)

The event is free of charge for Members and friends of the Nautical Institute, as well as for anyone from the shipping industry interested in the topic. Please join the cocktail networking event afterwards.

If you are interested please contact Capt. VS Parani, email: [email protected] , or Capt. Kuba Szymanski e-mail: [email protected]
